Most people look to astrology when seeking a perfect romantic mate not the perfect meal. However, Arlington astrologer and businesswoman Joan Porte explores the connection between food and astrology in her 295-page cookbook called “Sign of the Tines: The Ultimate Astrological Cookbook.”

Probably the only time the average citizen hears about the Department of Corrections probation program is when something goes wrong. An offender on probation violates his or her terms of her parole and commits a crime. The public is outraged and concerned about their safety and the safety of the community.

Remember those fun geography games in elementary school? Well, Arlington resident Alison Foley is using those past experiences to introduce geography to the children and young people of Peru through MUNDO the program she co-created with her Peace Corps site mate Keren Eyal in Ancash, Peru.

Martin Ogle, chief naturalist at Potomac Overlook Regional Park in Arlington, is the first recipient of the Arlington Green Patriot Award. The honor recognizes an individual, business or organization that exemplifies sustainability in more than one aspect of their recent life or operations to improve civic life in Arlington. Ogle was recognized for his lifelong dedication to environmental education and for emphasizing the interrelationships between people and the rest of nature. He served on the boards of several environmental and community organizations, including the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia, Arlington Food Co-op, Arlington Heritage Alliance, the Arlington/Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless and Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment.

Storyteller Ellouise Schoettler will perform her one-woman show, “Arlington National Cemetery: My Forever Home,” at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial at the cemetery on Memorial Day, at 2 p.m. After telling her story to a representative of the Women's Military Memorial, she was invited to perform during the Memorial Day celebration.

2013 Black Opal: Celebrating New Generation of Leaders

The Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network held its awards ceremony on April 6 at the Artisphere. Black Opal, an awards gala/black-tie reception, serves as the primary fundraiser for the organization. The funds raised by Black Opal support its programs including College Survival, Political Forum, and Opportunity to Thrive.
