Weather Doesn’t Stop Arlington Voters

George Stutdman, a student at Washington-Lee High school, is working for the Republicans. “My government teacher requested volunteers. I wanted to do my part. I’m handing out literature for the Republicans because my parents are Republicans.”

Pamela Fisher and Michael Lasky are headed for the gym at Madison Community Center. They had already voted at Tuckahoe Elementary School. “We always vote,” Fisher says. “I voted all blue, for the Democratic plate, not Vihstadt. It was a mistake to come in and not support the Columbia Pike streetcar. I felt like even though I’m from North Arlington that it was North Arlington people pulling all the dollars from South Arlington.” Lasky adds, “What she says.”

Dressed in her rain gear, Audrey Clements, Independent candidate for Arlington County School Board, hands out literature in front of the Central Library. Ron Boykin stops by to let her know he voted for her. “I’m 72 years old and I attended W&L and I’m against the name change.” Clements comments it was “political correction run amok.”

Lizzy Neal, Girl Scout Troop 6880, stands under the tent her mother had just popped up to cover their donut stand outside of the Central Library polling spot. “It’s supposed to rain hard later, so we had to be prepared.”

The heavy drizzle didn’t dampen the spirits of early morning voters at Madison Community Center. Ten people waited in line in the dark for the doors to open at 6 a.m. By 7 a.m. it was difficult to find a place in the parking lot and cars waited to find a place. One of the long-time poll workers observed there was a lot more traffic than in previous years. But he added,”it’s hard to hand out brochures when you are holding an umbrella and even harder when they have an umbrella, too.”
