Last Wednesday morning, every 10 year old in the United States woke up to the reality of President-elect Donald Trump. I am sure that some of us felt differently about it, but I want to share how my 5th grade classmates and I feel.
When I walked into the school, I noticed something odd. Kids were not running down the hallway having fun, instead there were small groups of kids talking amongst themselves in worried tones. My best friend Roman greeted me with “Welcome to Hell.” On the door of our classroom was a sign that said “Remain calm, everything is fine. We will discuss this in class.”
I know there are kids whose parents voted for Trump but here is something we should all agree on:
Presidents are supposed to be role models for all Americans including kids. We don't think that Trump has been a good role model and we want him to be. Most of us stayed up late watching the primaries, the debates, the campaign messages. It was bad and ugly. That is why we think that all kids in the U.S. and around the world need to hear from Trump directly, that people should always tell the truth, that bullying is not OK, that treating girls unfairly is not OK, that blaming Muslims for everything is not OK, that saying every Latino is dangerous is not OK, and most of all, he should learn more about our country and the world. Mr. Trump, you are very lucky to have become the President of the United States. We hope you will become a good person and a good President for everyone. Please listen to us, kids have an opinion too.
